Happenings

24 06 2009

The whole team is together finally. Rachel flew into San Pedro Sula this past weekend and we brought her to Copan Ruinas a few days ago. It’s great to finally be all together and start building our team and working together on UrbanPromise Honduras. She is still looking for a place to stay, but I’m (matt) happy to say that I’ve have found a place to live with a family. The family is really great, the lady is a spanish teacher so its almost like free spanish lessons all the time. Plus it is in the community where we’ll be running a program, which is awesome that I can start to get to know the community a bit better. The only disadvantage is that there is a sewage death creek that I have to hop every time I walk to or from Copan, and it’s only a matter of time before I fall in.

We need prayer from all of you in our amazing support network for a few things.

1) The most pressing is our money situation. We’ve been extremely blessed by all of your support and we are currently in a good place financially. The only problem is accessing that money. We are in the process of creating an organization bank account – which we have been told will take up to 3 months (which usually means three months minimum) – and until that happens UrbanPromise in the USA can’t send our money to us. It’s a little complicated, which I won’t try to explain here, but we’re trying to figure out how to get money for our summer camp. Our best idea so far is asking someone for a loan and then paying them back with our money once we can access it. Please pray that this all works out.

2) That we’d find a place for Rachel to live. Not the most fun thing in the world trying to find a good place to call home. Pray that we can find a good place and that she can settle easily and soon.

3) I know you all follow Honduran news religiously, so I’m sure you all know that the president is trying to change the constitution so that he can stay in power longer. The only problem is that it is illegal and a lot of people don’t want that to happen. There’s a vote this Sunday to see if they want him run again, and I think a lot of the country is wondering how it will turn out. There have been a few protests and demonstrations within the last couple months, so it’ll be interesting to see what will happen. Pray that it’s a peaceful and just process, and that Hondurans will be better in whatever outcome.

4) Continue to pray for us as we prepare for our summer camp, for our language abilities, for the children and families participating in our programs, and for Honduras as a country.

Rachel Nelson has a love and concern for the people of Latin America.  After graduating Texas A&M University in 2004 she moved to several different countries with the purpose of experiencing, connecting, and understanding diverse cultures.  In 2006 Rachel moved to Quito, Ecuador where she lived for over two years teaching at the University Escuela Politecnica Nacional.

It was by living and experiencing the culture and daily life of Latin America that Rachel developed a strong desire to address the needs she saw, and help the people she has come to love so deeply.
